5 Getting OVER it: Strategies to conquer stress and money worries

First off, I needed to get a grip! For the short run, I had to find ways to cope immediately with whatever was making me feel so stressed out it was making  me sick. Once that situation was under control, I needed a long-run strategy that would allow me to keep a lid on the angst and also to deal with new stresses that naturally arise.

At the  outset, I decided to list the things that were bugging me and try to put them in perspective. What did I imagine was driving me up the wall? Which of those issues were real, major problems, and which were just ditzy annoyances? And one way or another, what could I do about it?

I brainstormed every irritant I could think of, no matter how minor or goofy it seemed, listed them all in a table, tried to assess the seriousness of each one, and added a few ideas for how to cope. WordPress won’t insert this PDF, so click the link below to see the result of that first step:

Aggravating Issues

Thanks to this exercise, I now could see which bugabears were real “monsters” and which were minor issues that could be ignored or put on the back burner. About the mess in Dave’s yard, for example, I realized I needed to mellow out and appreciate Dave for what he is: a big, sweet, good-natured slob. If I let the shrubbery grow so my front window looked out onto a garden with a tall green backdrop, I couldn’t see his rusty junk, anyway! And the unmuffled engine racket from the local Hell’s Angel and the roar of the cop helicopters are just the trade-off for living in a centrally located single-family home with a big yard and a pool that I can afford: to get  myself into a blight-free in-town neighborhood, I’d have to resign myself to a one-bedroom condo with a view of the parking lot. So, the conclusions:

1. Get a grip! Quit gnashing teeth over small stuff.
2. Come up with some workable ways to deal with the issues that really do matter.

How this all played out…

I really liked your list – hope you won’t get sued by the girl at work. I had to think you must be in LA or thereabouts…pool and city and crime crap most of us don’t live with. In better thoughts – I found you after reading your response to “Paid Twice Already” about her father’s death and having to deal with the financial aspects and found your response very well written and detailed. I need to print it out and make sure my own parents and fiance are all ready, plus myself!

I have to read how you addressed these things. Btw, I have a “poop machine” also per my fiance – an Old English Sheepdog who WILL bite, tho most wouldn’t expect that. They are protective and big and lovable. Worry about his biting a stranger and suing us and worse – having someone make us put him to sleep for biting. Wouldn’t that s*** if your perp (perv?) made you lose your pet? Going to read more now!

Uh oh – don’t publish this – but the link to “how it all worked out” goes to an admin page and it says I can’t edit it (as if I would?) …need to fix that…and let me know what you did with your list! I need such a list …seriously, I was getting so overwhelmed with one thing and then another. My fiance even started feeling stressed when these “things” started happening around him once I moved in. The wireless keeps going “off” for some reason and I have to turn off the main computer switches to reset it; the printer keeps jamming (and I can’t print from the wireless laptop, so I have to use a laptop glued to a desk which irritates me no end, plus there is no where to put my legs since it’s not really a desk but a hutch or something), and the garbage disposal backed up because something he left on the counter and (expected me to clean up?) fell into it and clogged it up. Never happens when I’m not there (cause he cleans up for himself? hmm)….

So, gotta know what happened…and how to put this on a feed…

  3. Fixed! Thanks for letting me know about that.
